I was planning on not being lazy and actually adding some pictures to this post. But due to technical difficulties (being that my photos are analog and my scanner doesn't want to work today), you'll have to use your imagination. Here's a recap of 2012 and everything I managed to cram in through all the late nights and early mornings and todays that lasted 48 hours before tomorrow finally came.

I've been feeling so much better since my surgery, and I have so much more energy. What a wonderful thing! All those days of being exhausted during art school, and my handwork was only partly to blame! Now, even if I get a crappy night's sleep, I still feel ready to make art for the next 15 hours at least. But I'm supposed to take it easy for awhile. Before the surgery, even walking or standing for too long would aggravate the pain. So to make sure that doesn't happen, I have to have smaller adventures for awhile. As much as I'd love to explore the forest in my backyard and enjoy this beautiful sunny weather, I think I'll have to do that from my porch. This is what I'm up to today. Making things and spending time with Fergie (my cat). When I see lists like this, I really am grateful I'm an artist. It's really wonderful everyday, even with all the self-loathing that comes with it.

I spent a lovely [green] Christmas with Nicholas and am enjoying all this time watching our [my] favorite movies together. Although there was a bit of time where I was stranded in the airport, convinced I would never make it home in time for the holidays. Why's that? Well, let's recap Thursday evening, where I hugged my family tight and said see-you-laters and left my house at 4:15 pm for my flight that was scheduled for 7:10pm. Plenty of time. Right? No.

I have to say, I was totally anticipating holiday chaos, but I checked my bags without waiting and cruised through security. Almost. My dad, who brought me to the airport, stayed on the other side until he knew I made it through safely. And so I kept looking over to see his head, towering above most, laughing at all my blunders. (At least this time, when I went through the magic x-ray machine, it didn't say I was smuggling something in the side of my leg and my skull, resulting in a very disgruntled airport employee smacking the side of my head and me laughing and saying I wasn't even wearing bobby pins so this was further proof I was magnetic. Don't tell them that. They don't like to hear that.)

Michaela: Do you still hand check bags?
TSA Guy: Ummmmmm...
Michaela: I have some film that I'd like to have hand checked, just to be on the safe side.
TSA Guy: Uhhh, yeahhhhh, ummm, let me find someoneeeeeee...
Magic X-ray Machine Guy: Do you know what ISO it is?
Michaela: It's instant film, so it just makes me really nervous. I feel like it might break the ISO rules. And I really can't afford to have it ruined.

After successfully walking thought the magic x-ray machine:

TSA Man: Whose is this?
Michaela: Oh, that's mine! Ohhhh, I forgot to take my laptop out, sorry.
TSA Man: Just a laptop? Is that all ya got in here?
Michaela: Well, I also have a tablet.
TSA Man: A what?
Michaela: A tablet.
TSA Man: Like an iPad?
Michaela: No, like a Wacom tablet, that you use to draw on the computer. And that's a bunch of colored pencils. And that's a seam ripper. I'm an artist. That's a bottle opener, but they told me it was ok to fly with last time. That's an Xacto knife, but I remembered to take the blade out this time. I'll just stand over here.
TSA Woman: Whose is this?
Michaela: Oh, that's my film!
TSA Woman: Stand right there.
Michaela: You can take it out of the bag if you need to. I just figured that'd be easier for you guys.
TSA Woman: Stand right there, ma'am.
Michaela: Oh, I was just going to grab my other suitcase and laptop and tablet.
TSA Woman: Your what?
Michaela's Dad on the Phone: What's going on?
Michaela: I set everything off again.
Michaela's Dad: I guess you really are magnetic.
Michaela: That's why Mom wanted to get me tested. At least my hair didn't go off this time.

(This went on for awhile.)

And this doesn't even get into the massively-delayed-almost-cancelled flight-nightmare that ensued.
In the end, my 7:10 flight left sometime after 10pm, but instead of waiting for a connecting flight in the morning, I was picked up by Nicholas, who drove all the way to Charlotte, North Carolina, even though he had to work the next day. What a great guy!Michaela Lynchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10271010324966814746noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8512561585851191425.post-13894048334011653942012-12-17T23:22:00.000-05:002012-12-17T23:22:46.294-05:00I have a 6 year old sister.

I also tend to have high anxiety and extreme sympathy. What this means is, I don't watch the news. The only time I ever did was in the mornings before school, as we were all getting ready. I would catch snippets here and there, and occasionally get wrapped up in a story about some rescued animal or teenage hoodlum. But after one of those days you write numerous essays about, I came home from 6th grade and called my mom to ask about the numerous flags at half-mast that we passed driving back from school. She said one simple sentence and told me to turn on the news, and to not let my sister McKenna, who was at that time 5, see any footage. Ciara, then 8, and I watched footage of dusty firefighters and demolished buildings in a city I always dreamed of living in one day.

Things have changed in the last 11 years. I don't want to live in New York. People stopped saying "God Bless America." And I refuse to watch the news. If something's that important, people will be talking about it, and I'm bound to hear it from my friends or family or Facebook. Maybe this makes me ignorant. But when I hear about things that interest me, or when I need to vote on issues, I do my homework and read the necessary articles. But I avoid news clips like the plague.

Maybe it runs in my family. We often joke that my grandma will cry [tears of joy] when they open a new Wal-Mart. And Nicholas often teases me for crying while browsing Netflix. (Ok, guys, it's not that bad.) For whatever reason, when I see a person crying, either a friend face-to-face or an actor on a tv show, I'm bound to tear up. And trust me, I've spent years trying to master the art of wiping the corners of my eyes with a cardigan or blaming it on my allergies or simply blinking the tears away, but I still fail. And I might as well give up at this point. Let's face it: you're talking to the girl who gets sympathy nerves for everyone else's BFA defense (yet somehow I was completely calm for my own). Those humiliating moments that awkward freshmen experience in high school--I always felt embarrassed for them (and completely fine with my own blunders). Maybe some kind of doctor would tell me there's something totally wrong with me or I'm projecting my own blah blah blah, but really, it's not such a bad thing in the end. Too many people don't care enough. I just make up for them.

On Friday morning, the posts and links about Connecticut made the rounds on Facebook. I read article after article about people looking for answers and speculating this and that. And even though I take just about everything nowadays with a grain of salt, there were some facts that were consistent: that in some charming New England town that everything thought was as safe as could be, 27 people were killed in a shooting at an elementary school, and among those 27, 20 of them were first graders, just 6 and 7 years old.

Mia is in first grade. She's 6 and a half.

And immediately, as I read the headlines (obviously crying), I thought about the other children in that school: the ones who watched their best friends die, the ones that witnessed their teachers murder, the ones that heard the shots that they would learn killed their siblings. I thought about the first responders that will probably find it hard to sleep and impossible to forget such a scene. I thought about the parents, unsure about their children's safety. And I thought about the people in Oregon who, earlier that same week, experienced a shooting at a mall. Their community gets shaken up, and just 3 days later they have to relive it again.

Really, I tend to hate politics for the same reason I tend to hate the news: both leave me incredibly depressed and hopeless. So I'm not going to lecture about what should or shouldn't be done, because honestly, I don't know anymore. Let's face it: I'm an artist. I can't design safer schools. I can't push legislation. I can't do a lot of things, and I don't even know what I would do if I could. So situations like these leave me feeling pretty helpless. But besides being an artist, I'm also a Catholic--the kind that still goes to church on Sundays and holy days and celebrates Jesus' birth and feels guilty about just about everything. So I can pray. And maybe that sounds like nothing. A lot of days it feels like it, too. When you're in chronic pain, the last thing you want to hear from your mom is, "Well, say a rosary." But whether or not you know God is real, prayer tends to help you re-focus. Like every other kid, I know I've prayed that Santa would bring me my favorite toy, or that Jesus would help me *magically* do well on a test I didn't study for in the least. But at some point, your list of requests starts to sound selfish, and your pleases turn to thank-yous. Maybe our culture needs more thank-yous. Maybe it's as simple as that. But probably not.

So I'll tell you what I do, and what I did, on days like this. I prayed for everyone that needed it. And they'll probably never know that some weird art girl in the midwest who cries over everything prayed for them. But that's one more person in the world letting God in, keeping evil out, and thinking about someone besides herself for just a little while. And none of that is really a bad thing. And when Mia came home from school safely I hugged her perfectly safe little body. And when she overheard someone talking and asked about the other first graders who were hurt, I kissed her perfectly safe forehead and told her that sometimes people need extra prayers.

It requires the latest version of iTunes...

Which requires the Lion or Mountain Lion OSX.

I didn't update my OSX since I bought this laptop freshman year of college. I was on a much less ferocious cat.

So I had to call Apple and explain that apparently my computer is a dinosaur, and I can't update to Lion because I'm on Leopard and it won't let me. So I had to pay $20 plus shipping to get the discs to upgrade to Snow Leopard. Which I got Monday and installed yesterday. And then I could download Lion or Mountain Lion (might as well go with the newest) for another $20. So now I'm all updated. And now my iPod has music on it.

I have to say, people really weren't kidding about their computers running faster with Mountain Lion. I was definitely hesitant (not that I had a choice), but Mountain Lions might me my new favorite animal. I thought this dear ol' laptop was gonna go to that big hard drive in the sky in a week or two. Now it's like it's brand new. Oh, and the Launchpad is pretty cool.

Today I have to do laundry and lots of cleaning. Tomorrow's a big adventure.Michaela Lynchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10271010324966814746noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8512561585851191425.post-47721784181859017002012-11-03T21:59:00.002-04:002012-11-03T21:59:31.399-04:00Thoroughly Modern Michaela

A few nights ago, after a 13 hour shift, I bought an iPod touch. Here's why this is a big deal: I'm several decades behind.

I own one iPod nano, which is several generations old, and given to me by my old roommate when she acquired a new one. It works sometimes, and only holds 4GB, which really is like 3GB because it's always confused. Plus, most of my music collection is on vinyl. So I rely on the likes of Pandora and Groove Shark for more current music.

But after getting the emails from Apple about the new specs for the camera/video features, I figured it be nice to have something more portable than my Pentax or Canon Rebel. SLRs, film especially, are always my favorite. But they are bulky, and I get so impatient with downloading pictures to my computer, and developing film is expensive, with or without your own dark room. And I keep thinking about how few pictures I take nowadays. So this is a new option.

So while trying to figure out apps to be all modern, I downloaded just about everything that makes my photos look vintage and my videos look like Super 8. Maybe I'm doing this wrong.

I won't go on about apps I do or don't like, considering everyone else probably used them 2 years ago. But maybe, just maybe, I'll post more little projects on here. Later this week, I'll be leaving Nicholas again (we just can't stay in the same state!) to spend some time with my family in Detroit. Really, it's due to all this medical crap I'm dealing with, so they're gonna take care of me and get me to all the necessary doctors' appointments so I don't have to worry about passing out on the bus (oops). My job is really understanding, so I'll be taking time off from that, too. I'm sure I'll still be taking frequent naps, but I think a new batch of merit badges is long overdue.Michaela Lynchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10271010324966814746noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8512561585851191425.post-31163975598221133942012-10-03T15:07:00.003-04:002012-10-03T15:07:58.477-04:00Vanishing Act

I know I've been writing less and less here, and to be honest, I've been making less and less art. It has nothing to do with a lack of ideas or artist block. It's just that nowadays I have zero energy. The fatigue I always associated with my hardwork and art school, and months after saw as a post-art-school jet lag, turns out to be associated with the chronic pain I've been dealing with for quite awhile now. In the past 6 months, it seems to have gotten worse and worse, and while we have a pretty good idea what it is, it's the kind of thing that can only be diagnosed with surgery, or taking some crazy pill (with all sorts of weird side affects) that would cost $800 a month. Yikes. So for about 2 weeks, I had non-stop pain that seemed to top off the 1-10 scale they always ask about. I've been to the ER and an urgent care center and a specialist, trying to find a painkiller that will work, and for whatever reason, after about 3 days, my body tends to fight them off and make me miserable once again. It's hard enough to get through 12-hour shifts when all you want to do is crawl up in a ball, so on my days off, I haven't felt like doing much of anything except for sleeping and watching tv. We finally found some medicine that's helping with the pain for now. Unfortunately, it also makes me incredibly sleepy for a couple hours after taking the pill, and once the drowsiness wears off, I end up terribly nauseous and lightheaded. But I have to stick it out for another month before we think about surgery or expensive pills.

I really don't like posting too much personal stuff on here, especially anything negative. But I feel like I owe some sort of explanation. Hopefully we find a solution soon, and hopefully I get all my pep back. I have plenty of ideas for new projects once I find the energy. Until then, please don't worry.

Oh, and I've been having crazier dreams than usual lately. (My mom blames my meds.) The other day, I dreamt that I finally had a sheep named Beatrice, who was born in a golden egg. So I've been doing a few sketches during lunch breaks based on that, mostly because Beatrice was so beautiful in my dream. I don't mind this side effect.

Charleston has finally cooled down enough where I could sit on the porch all day. And today, I just might. I've got some sketching to do for a collaborative project with an elementary school, some sewing that needs to get done, and a headful of whimsical ideas.

This lovely photo (one of maybe 6 I own that are in color) was found at a little antique store down the road from my old apartment in Cleveland. Everything looks absolutely glamorous (compared to hitting the pool nowadays, where everyone seems, well, fairly trashy), which is yet another reason I should have been born a few decades earlier.

Anywho, happy Wednesday, or Friendsday, as Lisa Frank says. Because I liked her on Facebook, and now have plenty of colorful goodness in my newsfeed.

And, most importantly, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE RECIPIENT OF THE AWARD FOR RECEIVING MOST AWARDS, my wonderful friend Debbie, who recently rescued a baby squirrel and took him to work with her every day in a shoebox. She's the best squirrel mother ever!

So a few weeks ago, before being employed, I made these little books of awards because, well, I thought they were funny. And they are funny! They're the perfect size to slip in your pocket, and blank on the back to add an extra sentiment or two, in case the award category doesn't quite make your point. Each book has 20 perforated pages for you to tear out & give to those who deserve them the most. Now available in my Etsy shop:

On the days I work, I think about wonderful things and drink as much free coffee as I want (all of it) (not really) (maybe). On my days off, I earn wonderful Whimsy Scout merit badges and make marvelous things. Work isn't bad, and the hours are great. Right now, my biggest goal is to save my pennies for wishes and an apartment, so I have plenty more space to make plenty more wonderful things. Oh, and to get a rabbit and a sheep and maybe a few animals.

Although, my mom isn't too appeased with the idea of a "grandsheep" as she called it.

I have a lot to accomplish today, because tomorrow morning I leave for a weekend of camping on the beach and plenty of sun & sailing. And then I come home, express my love for indoor plumbing, and get a good night's sleep before starting my job on Monday.

Above is a page from my sketchbook after I made those award ribbon thank you notes, which were actually cut from paint swatches. I have another pile of little circles from more awards I've since made, which are being turned into merit badge sketches. I'm quite the accomplished gal.

If I'm lucky, the embroidery hoop I'm bringing along for the trip will be filled with a full batch of merit badges when I return. Have a swell weekend!

My very last 20+ page research paper in high school was about this duo. I made pocket friends of them. I've analyzed scenes of the movie for film classes. And maybe they weren't the best people, but they were sure interesting.

I think that will make the difference. I'm finally officially employed with super great art hours (12 hour shifts, which means many days off, or possibilities for a second job) and start Monday. Until then, I've been mailing out some recent Etsy orders, designing awards for everyone, and sketching some ideas for sticker sets. Yesterday I read a fantastic book which, a) is based around vintage vernacular photographs, b) so yes, it has pictures, and c) is soon to be turned into a movie directed by Tim Burton, who, honestly, is probably the perfect person for the job. But maybe I'll share more about that later.

I've also taken on the meticulous task of cleaning out my bookmarks on Safari. Holy cow, do I have a lot. There are just so many good arts I want to remember! And despite being invited early on when it was in its beta stages or whatever, I have refused to sign up for Pinterest because, well, I already made a Tumblr that I was obsessive about keeping super clean and organized to keep track of all my favorite images or whatever. But that's tedious. So I went over to <strike>the dark side</strike> Pinterest and have since been clearing out things that half the time, I'm not sure why I wanted to go back to them.

Anyhoodles, this is a nice thing you might think is nice. Iconic Painters to Guess, by Re:Design features clean vector images and hints to artists everyone should know. Here are some of the images, but if you need help with the answers, head over to their website and highlight the white text underneath each design.
And boy, do I crack myself up. Tonight I'm picking up some supplies for some awesome items soon to be added to my shop. This is a hint. Oh, and you should probably check out the brand new merit badges I listed on Friday. They're pretty rad. And completely one-of-a-kind.

And just as I hopped off the bus, Nicholas pulled up like a knight on shining motorcycle. He brought my helmet and coveralls to slip over my dress (because I hate wearing real pants) and gave me a ride home so I didn't have to walk 4.5 miles. And as dark as the clouds were, we beat the rain.
What a great guy.Michaela Lynchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10271010324966814746noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8512561585851191425.post-85023407511812423342012-08-01T21:24:00.002-04:002012-08-01T21:24:54.559-04:00Maybe I just want a job that doesn't mind if I dye my hair blue and pink again.Because maybe I'll dye my hair blue and pink again. Even though it's not long. Also, I might even get a haircut in the next 2 years or so. But probably not.

But really I just want a job. So I can save dollars for rent. So I can have an apartment with glitter everywhere and art all the time. My ideas are too big for this space right now. Also, Brian won't let me have a pet bunny.

In other news, Nicholas is the best. Since I spent the day feeling crummy and wallowing in my misery while continually embroidering merit badges, he surprised me with a bag of Hershey Kisses and a brand new box of cereal. I love cereal, in case you didn't know.

Tomorrow I'm going downtown for art and adventures. I think I'll stop by the library, too. And maybe find someone who will trade friendship bracelets with me.

This message is brought to you by a night of insomnia followed by a day of migraines. Happy Windsday, folks.

Ps. If I get a boy bunny, I'm naming it Glenn Coco.Michaela Lynchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10271010324966814746noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8512561585851191425.post-91086510289047998112012-07-30T08:33:00.004-04:002012-07-30T08:33:49.933-04:00Do Good Things.

This morning I told Nicholas I needed to paint the hallway today, like Brian asked. He said don't do that, do good things. So I started the day off with a Hershey bar for breakfast, and then checked Etsy to find that my Pink Diamond Merit Badge made it to the front page last night! So after adding a little award ribbon to the listing, I decided to catch up on my Vimeo feed. I've been trying to watch more videos lately, in hopes of getting in the right mindset for finishing a screenplay and maybe even starting to storyboard my short film that I'm sure I'll be working on for awhile. So I watched this one. Because the title sounded interesting, and the thumbnail was beautiful. And the piece turned out to be wonderful. So click full screen, because it makes it that much better, and watch.

Places Other People Have Lived from Laura Yilmaz on Vimeo.

I love the use of so many different techniques in this piece. I love the muffled voices and crumpled paper. I love the honesty. And I think the idea is something universal. The only part I was a bit disappointed with was the voice of the narrator. The writing didn't bother me, but the way it was read was so bland, that the honesty wasn't as obvious. It reminded me of English classes and reading short stories aloud. Maybe if the narrator just talked instead of reading, it would have been different. Oh well. I still think it's a beautiful piece.

So for the good things to be done today, I think I'll embroider some merit badges, listen to Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes (everyday), watch the Flatt & Scruggs Grand Ole Opry show, and make a dope sheet for a short little animation featuring owls and my favorite little artist (that, with any luck, will motivate Nicholas to build a copystand for me to photograph the frames and put it on Vimeo sooner rather than later). And maybe, after lunch and watching some Dawson's Creek (I love the 90s), I'll paint the hallway.
Michaela Lynchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10271010324966814746noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8512561585851191425.post-39631042448971708352012-07-26T15:30:00.000-04:002012-07-26T15:30:01.611-04:00Tumbling

Ok, ok, we all get it: I love awards. Mostly making them, and giving them. So after having a few of my items appear on Etsy's front page recently, I decided they deserved awards. You may notice, while browsing some awesome items on Etsy, that occasionally sellers will celebrate their front page achievements by uploading this little button. It's a small circle with a bit of text. All you really need. But why be content with just that?

Now, despite Googling to my heart's content, I could not find where the image originated. Maybe it came from the company, or some independent designer. Either way, this is it, just as small, and it is uploaded along with images of the product being sold. There's nothing wrong with it, except that it looks rather puny when the other images are scaled to 570 pixels wide, and this one is, oh, maybe 100. So I decided I would make my own! So when my items make it to the front page, they get an award! How fun is that?

I made two variations, in case one font isn't your style. Oh, didn't I mention? They're free for you to use! If your item makes it to the front page, feel free to tell the world with these award ribbons! If you click the one you want, it will open to its full size, at 570 pixels--exactly the width Etsy scales images to. I did add a watermark with my shop in it, only because awards are kinda my thing; I drew it and designed it, and would like to be credited with that. PLUS, I'm working on a few awards-theme items to add to my own shop soon! So enjoy! And congratulations!
Michaela Lynchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10271010324966814746noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8512561585851191425.post-52583774996812275512012-07-25T13:58:00.000-04:002012-07-25T13:58:55.033-04:00Scouting Inspiration, Part 4
